Your Travel to Iceland Next Week

Dear Elder Rasmussen,

You will soon arrive in Iceland to begin your service in the Denmark Copenhagen Mission! We are excited to welcome you!

Here is some practical information for your packing and when you arrive.

Please pack in your carry-on enough clothes and personal items for a couple of days in case your luggage gets lost. If luggage is mishandled, it can sometimes take two days for the airlines to get it to you. It is a good idea to take pictures of all your suitcases to help them know what to look for.

Important Things to Know When You Arrive at the Airport in SLC and Iceland

1. You may have to pay for a 2nd checked suitcase for the flight on Iceland Airlines. If you leave SLC on Delta, they allow you to check 2 bags. But, when you change planes in Boston, Iceland Airlines will only allow you to check 1 bag. You will need to pay for the 2nd bag. Pay for that 2nd bag with your debit card and get a receipt. When you arrive, we will reimburse you on your MFS card.

2. Have the following documents with you and handy when you land in Iceland:

a. Physical Passport (Have a photocopy of your passport in your carry on luggage)

b. The printed copy of your Iceland residence/visa permit

When you arrive at the airport, follow the other travelers and signs to “Passport Control”. (Be aware of your surroundings, noticing signs, and the direction other passengers are going. If you feel that you are lost, ask an attendant for help.)

After having your passport checked, you will be directed to the baggage belt assigned to the airline you traveled on. Use a baggage cart to put your bags on. (In the event that your baggage is not on the belt, contact an attendant there, who will help you. Sometimes your baggage may be late and not lost.)

Practice responding to questions about what you will be doing in Iceland by saying something like: “I will be giving service as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” If we call it missionary work, it may suggest to Iceland officials that you will be paid for what you do, which is not the case at all.

Good morning everyone! I hope you've been having a swell week! This week was pretty good! Last monday we got a new friend named Fernando. He's really cool and we're tying to help him to get his own witness that God is there and that there is a plan for everything! On wednesday we found 2 more friends, Gabriela and Lori. They were referrals from a member. They're both super nice and I think they'll connect well with the branch. Yesterday we started teaching the 9 year old son of 2 newly baptized members! He was so excited to learn and is super excited to be baptized! He knows so much already from primary, which was really cool to see! Shout out to primary teachers everywhere. Góðan og blessaðan daginn! This week was full of all sorts of things. We got to meet Gloria, this Kenyan lady who's really nice. We went with Elder Gunderson and she really liked his passion for the gospel! On Sunday she attended church and really loved it! One of the members picked her up, and the members were fantastic at fellowshipping her. Funke came as well! She's awesome. I've never taught anyone who has a better understanding of the gospel than her. She's ready to be baptized. Please pray for her and her husband! Vyacheslav came as well! He's really great and I could tell he enjoyed it. Elder Whittle and I have been getting along well. Elders Pearson and Richards went home on Saturday (their flight got delayed one day). It was sad to say goodbye and also weird that I'm the 2nd most senior missionary in Iceland haha... Esther Alfa

Hey guys! This week was crazy. Many unexpected things happened. We learned on Saturday morning that Esther Alfa had passed away. This came as a complete surprise to everyone. She was extremely young to pass away and the cause is yet unknown. I don't know who remembers, but Esther was the first convert that I had the opportunity to teach. She was baptized a few weeks after I got to Iceland. Keep her family in your prayers. Today at FHE we shared memories of her. I shared this verse: Alma 46:21 "And it came to pass that when Moroni had proclaimed these words, behold, the people came running together with their armor girded about their loins, rending their garments in token, or as a covenant, that they would not forsake the Lord their God..." Esther was a devout christian, strong in her faith, and never scared to stand for her belief in the Savior. She was an example of the believers to everyone she was arround.
